Baguio,The Summer Capital of the Philippines


In the Highlands of Cordillera Administrative Region,a City rises called Baguio,also known as Summer Capital City of the Philippines.Part of Benguet Province,in Luzon,northern part of the  Philippines.Baguio,located in the Cordillera Central mountain range in northern Luzon,1,540 meters(5,050 feet)above sea level.The city covers a small area 57.5 km²(22.2 sq mi).Baguio is known for its mild climate owing to its high elevation.The name of the city was derived from bagyiw,the Ibaloi words  for moss.

Baguio serve as Provincial Capital of Benguet from 1901 to 1916 but was administered independently after conversion to chartered city.The city became the center of tourism,commerce,education and business  in northern Luzon.The city's population is more than 300,000 Filipinos living in Baguio.

A highly urbanized city, Baguio city is a major retain in Cordillera region,commercial products priced are much cheaper,shoppers take advantages of competitively low price.Numerous shopping centers like Maharlika Livelihood Center,Centerpoint Plaza and Baguio Market,large Malls,like  Porta Vaga Mall,SM City Baguio and Baguio Center Mall are located in the city this increased tourist and commercial activities in the city.The City Market offers a wide array of locally made products and goods,includes wooden fabric and hand-strung beads to primitive wooden carvings and cut-flowers.Strawberries and string beans(Baguio beans) are shipped to urban areas nationwide.

City Tourism industry,one of the city's main source of income,local and foreign alike flock the city every winter because of its mild weather climate,average temperature range from 15 to 23°C(59 to 73°F).The months of November to February is lowest temperature of the year.Collages and Universities with local and foreign students select the city for their education.Half of the city's populations are students.

Majority of Baguio's populations are Roman Catholic,there are also some Religious groups in the city.There are also a significant numbers of Muslim and smaller group of  Buddhists living in the city.
BPO(Business Processing Outsourcing) also contribute Baguio's economy and employments.Some call center companies put their branch in Baguio.Large corporations,local and foreign companies are investing in the city.The industry assemble and exported products like computer parts,knitted clothes,small components for vehicles,transistor and other products.

In summer people select Baguio as their best vacation destinations because of its colder climate.The best year of the months to visit Baguio are December and Summer speciallythe month of  Holy Week in the Philippines.

There are many Parks and other places to visit "City of Pines",this are some of them you might want to considered if you visit the Philippines.Burnham Park,is a 32.8 4 hectares urban park located in the heart of Baguio.Named after the american architect and urban planner,Daniel Hudson Burnham who laid the plan for the city.south of the park a skating rink was constructed,in the eastern part of the park a grand stand and a football field used for parades,concerts and political rallies.Orchidarium and a Children park in the West.Bike's of different sizes for adults,children or even for families can rent a bike(bike with sidecar).Mines View Park,is a overlooking park in the northeastern outskirts of Baguio, a four kilometers from downtown of Baguio.The park overlooks the old mining town of Itogon and offers the glimpse of Amburayan Valley.The Mansion,the official summer residence of the President of the Philippines.Baguio Cathedral also known as Our Lady of the Atonement Cathedral,a Roman Catholic Cathedral,build in 1936.Lion's Head,is a famous attraction in Kennon Road,a major highway in northern Luzon.The head measures 40ft.(12m) in height.T he head was conceptualize by the Lions club member.

History of the City:
The Spanish occupation in the Philippines,Spaniards in 1846 establish a commandancia in nearby La Trinidad organized Benguet into thirty one Rancherias.One of which was kafagway,most of this is kafagway is owned by Ibaloi chieftain Mateo Cariño.

La Trinidad was liberated by filipino revolutionary forces commanded by Pedro Paterno against the Spanish conquerors during the Philippines Revolution in July of 1899 and took over the government.Mateo Cariño converted Baguio into town and proclaimed himself as the mayor of the new town.During 1900 Baguio was established as a Hill Top by the Americans at the site of Ibaloi village known as kafagway.The only Hill Station made by Americans in Asia.

The American established Civil Government in Benguet on 22 of November 1990,with the passage of Act 48,converting  all rancherias into town,the Act also made Baguio the capital of Benguet.Sioco Cariño the oldest son of Mateo Cariño was proclaimed as president of the town.Baguio become a Chartered city through Act No.1963,on September 1909,second to become a chartered city after city of Manila.


After the Spanish-American war that lasted two years of fightimg,the United States took over the Philippines ,and made Baguio as their summer capital in the Philippines islands.The City was build and planned by a famous and one of the most early successful  city planner,Daniel Burnham an American architect,in 1904.The Mansion House was built and became the official residence of the Governor -General.
In World War 2,Philippines Constabulary 1st infantry regiment,Philippines Commonwealth Army 1st,2nd,11th,12th,13th,15th and 16th infantry divisions of the filipino troops,while the American troops of the 33rd and 37th American divisions,and the USAFIP-NL 66th infantry regiment entered Baguio and fought the Japanese Imperial Army commanded by Gen. Tomoyuki Yamashita in World War 2.
Japanese forces were overwhelmed  by the combined forces of American and filipinos in Baguio.Gen. Tomoyuki Yamashita and Vice Admiral Okochi surrendered all Japanese Imperial Forces in September 3,1945 thus ending the second world war.

After the 1990 earthquake July 16,1990 that struck the city and devastated almost the entire city,with a magnitude of 7.8.The city was rebuild with the help of international donors around d the World.Today Baguio City,"The City of Pines" is one of the best Tourist Destinations in the Philippines and still it is  called "Summer Capital of the Philippines".
