Maldives is a tropical nation located in the Indian Ocean,composed of twenty-six ring-shaped atolls,which are made up of more than 1,000 coral islands. It's known for its beaches,blue lagoons and extensive reef. Maldives is one of the world's most geographically dispersed countries,as well as the smallest Asian country by both land area and population.

  1. Male Friday Mosque is one of the oldest and most ornate mosques in the city of Male,Kaafu atoll,Maldives. Coral boulders of the genus Porites,found throughout the archipelago,are the basic materials used for the construction of this and other mosques in the country because of its suitability. Although the coral is soft and easily cut to size when wet,it makes sturdy building block when dry. The mosque was added to the tentative UNESCO World Heritage cultural list in 2008 as unique examples of sea-culture architecture. The mosque was build in 1658,it was build over an earlier mosque constructed in 1153 by the first Muslim Sultan of Maldives. The Mosque is oriented west. It's prayer carpet is angled towards the mosque's northwestern corner,so worshipper can face Mecca while they pray. The Carpet can accommodate 1,372 people if each devotee occupies one piece. The mosque has a reported capacity of 10,700 for Friday prayers. The main building,used for daily prayers,is divided into three sections,the mihtab (used by the imam to lead the prayers),the medhu miskiy (the mosque's central area) and the fahu miskiy (the rear of the mosque). A long,carved 13th-centiry panel memorializes the introduction the Islam of Maldives.

National Museum (Maldives) established on the national day of the Maldives,the first national museum of the country was opened on November 11,1952,with the purpose of preserving history and instilling patriotism among the people of the Maldives,the museum has large collection of historical artifacts,ranging from stone objects to fragments of royal antiquity from the Buddhist era to the rule of islamic monarchs. The three-storied museum (old building) is located in the Sultan Park in Male,which is part of the site of the Maldivian Royal Palace compound dating back in the 17th century. The two-story Us-gekolhu is the only remaining structure of the palace demolish by fire in 1968. A diverse collection of artifacts are displayed in the museum,including relics from the foregone pre-Islamic period era,thrones,royal sunshades and furnitures,customes and shoes,coins,ornaments,arms and armors and others.

Muliaage is the official residence of the President of Maldives,located at the historical center of Male in close proximity of the Medhu Ziyaarai,the Friday Mosque,and the Munnaru (Grand Minaret of Male). The construction of the Muliaage was initiated in the year 1914 and completed in 1919,build in the style of bungalows in vogue during the colonial era in Ceylon. Muliaage, meaning the "new house of Muli" was build on the site "Mulee'ge",the ancestral home of Shamsuddeem. Neither Muliaa'ge nor Mulee'ge ever served as a royal palace. However,it is located just a stone's throw away from the site of the royal palace,now the Sultan's Park and the National Museum of Maldives.
  4. Islamic Centre is an architectural landmark in Male,opened in November 1984. The mosque is the largest in Maldives,and also one of the largest in South Asia admitting over 5,000 people. The centre also serves a conference hall where the official meetings and ceremonies are held,an islamic library and a number of offices. Furthermore,the Islamic Centre acts as a major tourist attraction of Male,because of its location near the main jetty of Male and due to the beautiful architecture of the mosque. The magnificent golden dome of the mosque is also evident on the skyline of Male. The shining golden dome of the mosque is a standout as are also the interior walls decorated with beautiful woodcarvings and Arabic calligraphy,the centre also houses a library and a conference hall.
  5. Addu City is a city in Maldives that consists of the inhabited islands in the southernmost atoll of the archipelago. Addu City is the second largest inhabitance in Maldives,in terms of population,and is the only inhabitance to get the status of "city" other than the capital city. Hithadhoo is the second largest island in the Maldives with a surface area of 525.7 hectares,it has a length of 6.8 kilometres and a width of 1.8 kilometres at its widest point. It is also the second largest inhabited island in Maldives. The part of the island south of the town is lushly vegetated with palms and shrubs,whilst the northern end of the island consists of a partially stony,unreal scrubland,which can be explored only on narrow trails. Hithadhoo town is marked by dusty roads,narrow lanes,leaning houses and dense vegetations.
  9. Maamingili is the largest and most populous of the islands of Alif Dhaal Atoll which border the South Ali Marine Protected Area (MPA). Unlike all the other islands in this chain,it is naturally round in shape,owing on its positions on one of the edge of one of the widest channels of the MPA. The main area of habitation is toward the eastern half of the island. A deep water access harbour leads toward the enormous main street,which runs east to west straight through the heart of the island. This busy street is full of different kind of shops,with the tourists souvenir shop dominating the eastern end. Toward the western end of the street is a small mosque,the medical centre,the huge and very impressive school and the island counsel offices.
